Beginning in the 1970s, the network sitcom began to use the shock and surprise element of a character’s coming out to generate laughs. For most of these programs, the coming out of a conventionally macho man provided the greatest narrative tension and humor. In the series premiere of CBS’s Alice, Linda Lavin’s Alice falls hard for Mel’s ex-pro football player pal, Jack, only to find out that he indeed plays for the other team. Then, in Fox’s breakthrough black sitcom, Roc, Roc’s (Charles Dutton) uncle Russell (Richard Roundtree of SHAFT fame) returns home and stuns the family by announcing his upcoming wedding—to a man!
