SHE’S A BOY I KNEW is a film about gender and transition: Steven comes out as Gwen, decides to transition from male to female, and lives to tell about it. Watching SHE’S A BOY I KNEW is like becoming a part of Gwen’s extended family. Family archival footage, one-on-one interviews, phone messages, letters, photographs, animation, and the loving voices of Gwen’s friends and family reveal their deeply personal stories throughout this process. The result is an emotionally charged account of the individual experiences, struggles, and stakes that her two sisters, mother, father, best friend, and wife brought to Gwen’s transition. SHE’S A BOY I KNEW is comical, heartbreaking, uplifting, and painfully honest. Gwen is both subject and director, making SHE’S A BOY I KNEW a film not to be missed.
