We’re thrilled to kick-off the 2009 Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival by celebrating the life of Quentin Crisp, arguably the most colorful, witty, and nonconformist gay figures of the 20th century. Renowned for his sharp humor (“Fashion is what you adopt when you don’t know who you are”), he achieved international fame when THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT, the film version of Crisp’s autobiography, was broadcast in 1975. That attention-grabbing, controversial film (also screening at this year’s SLGFF) earned critical acclaim for actor John Hurt’s pitch-perfect portrayal of Crisp.

In the highly anticipated AN ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK, John Hurt reprises his role as Quentin Crisp, this time in the latter years of the legend’s life. The film begins in the late ‘70s when Crisp is invited to New York to dispense his unique brand of advice from the stage in an one-man off-Broadway show called “How to Be A Happy Person.” The tumultuous love affair between the wry eccentric and the Big Apple begins instantly upon his arrival; the bond is cemented when he attains resident alien status based on his “unique qualities.” Through the years, his talent and wit bring a host of uncommon characters into his circle, but it’s also that same outspoken nature that occasionally puts him at odds with the gay community.

With an outstanding ensemble cast that includes Denis O’Hare, Swoosie Kurtz, Jonathan Tucker, and Cynthia Nixon, and a nostalgic, infectious soundtrack, AN ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK will please both longtime fans of Quentin Crisp and those encountering this delightful, prolific, and influential gay pioneer for the first time.

Your ticket includes the Opening Night Gala at Sodo park, 3200 First Ave. S. Enjoy delicious food and taste a variety of refreshing beverages--all included in your ticket price.

Leave your car at the Egyptian Theatre and hop on the big yellow bus, which will provide round trips from the Egyptian Theatre to Sodo Park. Ample parking will also be available.
