In 1992, San Francisco proudly hosted the
first International Bear Rendezvous (IBR).
This gathering of hefty, hairy, gay men
culminated in the crowning of the first
Mr. International Bear. Just over a decade
later, thousands of bears, as well as the
bear-friendly and bear-curious, converged
upon the city. Director Marc Klasfeld follows
half a dozen contestants vying for Mr.
International Bear 2004, including natural
showman Mr. SoCal Bear, former Marine
Mr. Kentucky Bear, and our very own cuddly
Mr. Northwest Bear, Alan Matthews.
This engaging, entertaining, and touching
documentary offers a glimpse into the
fast-growing bear subculture—a segment
of gay men who proudly reject the “young,
thin, and beautiful” gay stereotypes. Say
“Woof!” as these burly men come together
to raise awareness, money, and have a great
time. (Be prepared for the Balls to Boots
competition!) You’ll find yourself cheering
for your favorite in no time!
