Veteran director Monika Treut departs from previous S/M themes (SEDUCTION: THE CRUEL WOMAN, FEMALE MISBEHAVIOR) in GHOSTED, a lesbian love story that spans continents and the chasm between life and death. Chen Ai-ling (Ke Huan-ru) leaves her mother in Taipei to find her birth father in Hamburg, where she meets visual artist Sophie Schmitt (Inga Busch), and the two rapidly fall in love. Suddenly and mysteriously, Ai-ling dies. The stunned Sophie pores over her photos of Ai-ling as she grieves her loss. In Taipei for a video art exhibition dedicated to Ai-ling, Sophie meets Mei-li (Hu Ting-ting), a journalist who wants to write the truth of Ai-ling’s death and to pursue Sophie. Flashbacks reveal details of Sophie’s relationship with Ai-ling as the mystery unfolds. Cinematographer Bernd Meiners uses candid shots of the couple’s lovemaking and extreme close-ups to display Ke’s charisma. Excursions into the supernatural lead to the film’s larger question: What is real and what is intangible in love and loss across cultures?
