At 52, “Handsome” Harry (Jamey Sheridan, “Trauma”) has kept the rugged good looks that earned him his Navy nickname. Although well-liked, he’s been divorced for a long time, rarely sees his adult son, and seems determined to remain alone.
One day, Harry gets a call from Kelly (Steve Buscemi), a former Navy buddy on his deathbed, whom he hasn’t seen in thirty years. Kelly implores Harry to seek forgiveness on his behalf from David (Campbell Scott), a comrade they betrayed long ago. At first, Harry wants nothing to do with it, but his conscience compels him to call on his former shipmates and fulfill Kelly’s dying wish about that fateful night. Confronting the three other men involved, he observes how each has dealt with his own guilt: Rheems (John Savage) hides behind his wealth and righteous moral posturing, Porter (Aidan Quinn) has divorced himself from the violent implications of his military past, and soft-spoken Gephardt (Titus Welliver) has turned to Jesus. Each encounter both clarifies and further clouds the truth that haunts Harry, but he knows it is only through confronting the distant past—and finally David himself—that he can begin to truly live again.
